Post Confederations Cup: Cape Town is ready to welcome the world!

Cape Town may not have been a host city to the 2009 FIFA Confederations Cup, but the city is sharing in the afterglow of the Confederations Cup and getting geared up to host the next major FIFA event in the run-up to the 2010 FIFA World Cup, the final draw in December 2009.

Successes and learnings around the Confederations Cup have been noted – as has the new level of national pride, emotion and energy around soccer – as Cape Town prepares to showcase herself to the world.

“Bafana Bafana’s outstanding performance in the Confederations Cup tournament has been a real ego boost for South Africans,” says Cape Town Tourism CEO Mariëtte du Toit-Helmbold, “and this positive mood is bound to enhance the enthusiasm for Cape Town’s hosting of the final draw in December this year. It’s clear now too that the 2010 FIFA World Cup really is around the corner and that we are indeed ready to welcome the world!”

On June 11 2009, with just one year to go until the 2010 FIFA World Cup kick-off, Cape Town Tourism launched a mini-site, www.capetown.travel/2010. Traffic to the site has been significant with many visitors from around the world already planning their trip to the Mother City for 2010.

Cape Town Tourism is calling on the people of Cape Town to Live It, Love It, LOUDER by getting ready for the final draw and the 2010 FIFA World Cup itself by making soccer a part of their lifestyle.

“Local citizens are central to the success of the event. Getting to local games and absorbing the energy, reading up on the rules, learning how to play the vuvuzela – it is all part of soccer fever as we prepare for June 11 2010,” enthuses Du Toit-Helmbold. “The warmth and hospitality of the people of Cape Town will be the most memorable part of our World Cup visitor experience. This is a first for Africa, South Africa and Cape Town – let us do ourselves and our country proud.”

Cape Town Tourism expects a good influx of visitors between now and the World Cup as they encourage visitors to extend their stay in Cape Town and surrounding areas.

“In the preliminary surveys done, four out of five expected visitors to the World Cup have indicated that they wish to stay in Cape Town,” says Du Toit-Helmbold. “We are positioning Cape Town as the lifestyle capital of the event and working hard with the industry to ensure that we have the capacity to host visitors and can meet the high standards expected from a world-class host city.”

Cape Town Tourism, however, cautions against over-pricing and unrealistic expectations: “The legacy of the World Cup is in our hands, we must manage it responsibly and realistically.”

Live it! Love it! LOUDER!

Between now and the final draw, Cape Town Tourism will roll out the next phases of our Live it, Love it, LOUDER campaign. We urge all Capetonians to get involved with the activities we'll be organising in their areas. Dates and happenings will be communicated via our website, local radio stations and press releases.
